The Ethnography of Speaking: A Micro-Analysis

Scene: The scene of this observation was in the Campus Center in Mackenzie's grill and the subjects were four of my friends. The speech was directed to the group when each of us were talking to each other. Other people in the restaurant may have over heard because everyone talking was being extremely loud, but it was mostly directed at our group of friends

Ends: The purpose of one of the conversations was to talk about our day and practice. THe conversation was just small talk but that is the usual subject when we get together for a short period of time.

Act Sequence: The conversations began when the five of us sat down for dinner in the campus center. After we sat down we all started to talk.

Key: The tone was pretty energetic for most of the conversations until someone would say something they did not want others to hear, then the tone became more serious, everyone leaned in, and the volume lowered much more. However, after those moments the spirit was usually very high throughout all of the conversations.

Norms: Although in "polite" conversation there should not be any interruptions, when my friends are talking with each other, it is hard to get a complete sentence in before being interrupted by someone. Most likely what they have to say is completely irrelevant as well. However, there are less interruptions if the story is serious, but there are usual still a handful
